I have a Janome Memory Craft. Why is my thread breaking so much? Also, my bobbin case rattles and grinds.?

I have problems with tangles in the bobbin case. The bobbin case does not stay in place like I think it should. I work mostly with calico fabrics and some felts. I make baby blankets and felt puppets for the hospital. I also make a lot of appliques to put on the blankets. I keep the feed dogs and hook race clean. I change needle quite often. I have been sewing for over 25 years. I would really appreciate it if someone could give me some advice. thank you for taking the time to read this.

I’d start with a good cleaning, and a review of the threading instructions, as thread jams are often due to threading with the presser foot down (it should be up to open the tension disks) and/or not holding the thread ends when starting. Broken threads are often due to misthreading, needle improperly set, take up lever not fully up when beginning to stitch, burrs along the thread path, poor bobbin winding or bobbin the wrong type, or crummy thread.

As you probably know, upper tension should be about 4 (normal range 3-5) for most stitches, most fabrics. If you need to routinely go outside that 3-5 range for usual fabrics like cotton shirting, it’s probably time for a trip to the sewing machine doc.
