Why am I not getting brown when I mix red, yellow and blue (colored pencils)?

I know you’re supposed to get brown when you mix red, yellow and blue with pencil crayons. However the colours aren’t really mixing to form brown- but instead a strange mixture where you can see parts of blue, yellow and red. Any recommendations or hints as to what to do to get a better result? By the way I’m using Lyra colored pencils, similar to Prismacolors.

How much of each color are you using? Try pressing lightly and evenly with each color and see what happens. If you don’t get brown the first time, then press slightly harder with each color again until you get the result you like.
