Why is Esmerelda from Hunch Back not in the Disney Princess Collection?

I mean, I know she wasn’t a princess, I don’t even think she was gypsy princess.

However, Mulan was not a princess either, nor did she ever become one. (her ‘prince’ was a general.) and I know Mulan is considered a Disney Princess.

So Why isn’t Esmerelda from the Hunchback fo Notre Dame considered one? I really liked her.

Disney Princesses either have to be a Princess by royalty, or fit into what Disney considers “The Princess Mythology”. It is never fully explained what the criteria for this is, but one can look at who the Princesses are and try to figure it out.

Disney considers the following to be Disney Princesses:
-Cinderella
-Sleeping Beauty
-Jasmine
-Snow White
-Mulan
-Pocahontas
-Ariel
-Tiana
-Rapunzel (not out yet)
-Alice (I have seen her sometimes considered a princess, and sometimes not. In this drawing for a Princess CD, she is included. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Disney_princess_alice.jpg)

The one thing all these characters have in common is that they are all the main characters, or even the title characters of their movies. Jasmine is the only exception, but she is of course a Princess by royalty. Disney must consider characters official Princesses if they are the main character of their movie, or are the leading heroine, even if they are not real Princesses.

This leaves out female characters like Esmerelda, Tinkerbell (who used to be considered a Disney Princess but had the title removed), Kida, Jane, Megara, Wendy and many others. They probably had to draw a line somewhere or every female Disney character would be a Princess. I also really like Esmerelda!
