What is “Pig Iron Thunder”?
My dad served in Vietnam and has never spoken about it. I recently found his Boony hat which is embroidered with the words “2/40 Pig Iron Thunder” on one side, “Indiana Polis” on the other, and the number 95 is written in black marker on the top. I am just looking for some information on what this may mean
I’d say the 2nd Battalion, 40th Artillery, which was in Vietnam as part of the 199th Light Infantry Brigade. The 2/40 was a 105mm towed howitzer battalion. This means they towed their howitzers behind trucks until they went into battery to fire them. “Pig Iron Thunder” sounds like an unofficial unit nickname. Some good information here:
