DIY Bleaching(?) Pants – Best Method, Tips, Warnings?
This may seem like a simple project, but I am completely new to DIY projects. I really want to try making a pair of pants like these:

I’m guessing that bleaching is the best way to go, but I want to try and make the fade as smooth as possible. How strong should the bleach concentration be? Do I just dip them in a bucket with bleach and water, or what? I’m totally clueless. I’m not sure what kind of fabric I’ll be using (or if it matters), because I won’t be using any pants I currently own — so unless it’s easier to work with denim, I’ll probably just pick up a pair that’s closest in color.
I’m looking for anything, really. Any ideas as far as method, any tips, any warnings. Anything.
It’s not bleach, the chemical used is called dye discharge. Bleach will damage the pants and they will fall apart after the first couple washings. These pants will be done using a method dyers use called “wicking” The item to be dyed or discharged will be suspended above the vat holding the dye or dye remover. The very bottom hem will be the only part immersed. The liquid will work it;s way up the fabric in a process called wicking. When the discharge is high enough the pants are taken down and rinsed quickly and thoroughly to stop the discharge. This is how discharge dye jeans are made, like the ones in the picture. Denim is best because of indigo -the dye used -has a natural tendency to fade, this takes advantage of this property.
Or you can do it easier, and start with white pants and hang them in dye upside down so the waist gets the most color and the legs the least. Mix a bucket of any fabric dye and suspend the pants in the dye so only the waist and a bit lower are in the dye and allow the dye to wick up that way.
You will need to experiment to understand how this works. To understand the science behind wicking use a bit of food color, a small glass and a paper towel. Put a small bit of water in the glass, a drop of food color, and them some paper towel rolled into a sausage shape. only the bottom should be in the food color. Leave it for a while and when you return you will see that the food color is now part way up the paper towel. When you dye your pants, this principle is what will make parts darker and parts lighter in a gradient effect. In dyeing this effect is often called “ombre” If the liquid is a discharge agent, then the color will vanish in the way.
What ever dye technique you use only 100% cotton garments. They are easiest to dye and they respond best to a variety of dyes and dye techniques. If there’s any polyester in a garment the resulting color will be pale and not true. Never try to dye 100% polyester, it won’t dye.

The the basics. You will need to experiment and learn through the process of trial and error. You might want to buy some unbleached muslin to experiment with, or perhaps a few cheap cotton bedsheets. When you understand how the dye and fabric react with each other, you then can make a pair of custom dyed jeans that will cost several hundred dollars to buy in a store.
