How do I make sure that I cut fabric straight?

I am making simple curtain panels from fabric with a vertical stripe. How do I make sure that the stripes don’t start to look crooked. I learned how in junior high sewing class and don’t remember anymore.

All woven fabric has what is called a grain ( in simple terms,the threads that run up and down and across. As a previous person told you, take a small snip and the salvage (finished) edge and tear apart to the other salvage edge. This will show you the straight of the fabric. This will let you know if your stripes were woven in the fabric or printed on.If they were woven in, you should be good to go with no problems.
