are mounted gemstones usually damaged?

Because I have a jewelry loupe, I’m always looking at mounted jewelry and have found a lot of nicks, chips and cracks in mounted jewelry! Is this the norm? What percentage of mounted jewelry is damaged?

I would think, that rather the damage happened when the piece was mounted, not because they used a damaged piece. Also, are the pieces you are looking at vintage? Wear and tear, especially on softer stones and crystals does a number around the edges and where it’s mounted. It also really matters how valuable the piece is, and who did the mounting. Did they know what they were doing, did they put care into their work etc. I think it’s more a number of factors rather than 1 (ie. damaged stone) that result in the nicks and cracks on mounted jewellery.
