How to attach appliques (fabric decals, iron on) to a winter jacket (100% polyester outside, down filled)?

My son (3) won’t give up his Thomas the Tank winter jacket and will not wear the new one I got him bc it doesnt have Thomas. Have found some Cars appliques, the iron on kind, but not sure how to attach these to the jacket. Its polyester on the outside, fleece lined with a fill that is half down (not sure what the other half is, but think its poly as well). Love crafting but useless at sewing… not sure if an iron will melt the poly. Suggestions please?

Whatever you decide on, do not iron the decal on as the polyester will melt with a high heat. Use glue or sew it on.
