Motion Quilting

anyone know how to “free motion quilt”?

i am a beginner quilter working on my second quilt. i have seen so many quilts that i love that have what many people call “free motion” quilting. i have a brother machine and i was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to do this. i think i may have to shut off the feeder on my machine but i do not know how. i have also see on some videos that there is an attachment that can be used on certain machines. any advice is helpful! thanks!

The free motion quilting must be done with the “feed dogs” lowered so YOU are the one moving the fabric by hand. You must have a “darning foot” instead of your regular sewing foot. Some machines have no way to drop feed dogs but a plate for that machine can be put over them. You need to refer to the manual for your model of machine. There are several books and most quilt shops offer classes. There are special gloves you need to wear for gripping the fabric to move it around. There are cheap ones for $3.50 at Joanns. The machine should have a needle down position. You need to start working in the center of the quilt outward to the edges. You will need to leave the sides all larger to have enough material to hold while you quilt. I would suggest a nice scroll design to start.
