How would I alter a pants pattern in sewing for a severely obese person?
Im trying to make some clothes for my mom who is severly obese and long distance. So far shirts and dresses have worked fine, but Im wondering how to alter a regular pants pattern so it will fit her properly. Any advice would be helpful.
a number of ways. first is your pattern somewhat close to her size? is it listed as loose or very loose fitting? Elastic waist pants only! you can add some (about an inch)to each side seam. you can add a little to the crotch seams.(5/8 – 3/4). then you need to slash and spread the pattern. cut the pattern lengthwise down the middle(slash)& spread it 1/2 the amount you need to add to the girth! if you need 4 inches, spread it 2 inches. you will need to take some paper to the pattern to keep the spread in place. i did this many times in high school tailoring when everybody was twiggys size and i was not
