How is the surface area of a piece of paper around 600 cm squared?

What would be the formula to get there, if you’re measuring a 8.5×11 piece of paper?

I think that you may be misunderstanding what surface area is. Surface area is, by definition, the total area that a solid figure encompasses about its edges. In other words, it is the sum of the areas of the faces of the figure. Unless you know the thickness of the 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper, you cannot find the surface area. Further, the measurements that you have given are in inches. If you want to know the area of one side in cm^2, you will need to convert inches to centimeters using the conversion factor 2.54 cm/ in.

Therefore, the area of the front face of this sheet of paper is:

(8.5 in * 11 in) * (2.54 cm/ in) * (2.54 cm / in) = 603.225 cm squared.
