Why instantiate a Singleton class?

In OOP design patterns, why do they instantiate the singleton class? Just for the constructor?

I didnt get what you want to know?

Just for info, Singleton class is class that has only one object. This can be achieved by using bunch of static variables .. may be padlock variables if you want thread safe and most important making its constructor private so no one outsider can create object out of it. Then expose one public method that allows to get object of that class which is always single in memory, this can be done by making one object of that class static variable of itself…
