Would a Brother 270 sewing machine be good for a beginner?
Would like to start sewing/embroidering.
Have looked at Brothers sewing machines for functions and price. Seem most cost effective and have many stitches, functions.
What is the difference between the 270 and 350?
What is a PED?
How do these do with different kinds of threads? (had heard they didn’t do well w/rayon?)
Do these models come with capability to add more embroidery designs? How do you download them from internet, (put on some sort of disk and add to sewing machine?)
Relavent information is greatly appreciated.
Suggestions. (not any high end machines for a hobby/beginner please, not paying $1000 for one.)

Yes, it is a very good machine for beginning machine embroidery. It’s fairly easy to use .
You also have to buy either an Ultimate Box or an Amazing Box to transfer designs onto a card that fits in the side slot on your machine. (It’s basically a small floppy disk.) You can download thousands of designs from the internet, store them on your computer, and then when you want to embroider them, transfer to the card and put it in your machine.
You have to use special machine embroidery thread. I started out with Madeira Rayon, and I like their PolyNeon as well Just remember, regular sewing thread for sewing, and embroidery thread for embroidery! Keep them separate so you don’t mix them up.
PED Basic is software for transferring designs to machine, but I have never used it so I cannot comment on it. Embird software and EmbroideryMagic2 software are also very very useful.
