Are you fed up with China’s toxic imports??

Toxic dog & cat food. Poisonous lead paint on our childrens toys. Deadly chemicals found in chinese made toothpaste. Chicken, pork and fish with tainted Chinese pet food ingredients. Dried apples preserved with a cancer-causing chemical. Frozen catfish laden with banned antibiotics. Scallops and sardines coated with putrefying bacteria. Mushrooms laced with illegal pesticides. I mean the list goes on and on… The Food and Drug Administration detained at U.S. ports in just one month, more than 1,000 shipments of tainted Chinese products. So, WHY do we still buy from them?? But Oh! You just try to go shopping and buy only products made here in the USA… Expensive & some items are hard to find if not impossible. The whole thing is disgusting!

Profit motive on part of manufacturers and distributors, who pass the buck to sub contractors and sub sub contractors. Americans have an insatiable appetite for goods of any sort and an unwillingness to look at the social costs of buying and owning excessive amounts of stuff. So the Chinese scandals will continue, as the consuming public cries out for increased regulation and inspection of the imported goods … but are they willing to pay the increase in price to pay for the regulation and inspection. Better yet … consumers can and should practice restraint in their purchasing: besides always checking the label for country of origin, do you really need to buy a dozen pairs of cheap socks, or would your money be better spent on four pairs of high quality socks? A whole set of cookware at a bargain price, or two really well-made saucepans?

The asker lists a number of tainted products from China … we still buy these products because we think we can’t find the same goods from reputable manufacturers or distributors. I’m not sure when the American consumers decided that they NEED to have fresh seafood at all times of the year or instant access each week of the year to the newest toy advertised to their kids. Can we revert to patience, where fresh seafood is an occasional splurge treat for midwesterners, or the era when children received one or two toys for birthday and one or two toys at Christmas? Reduce your consumption of everything and you will reduce the potential of exposure to tainted goods; this will reduce the number of shoddy products that end up in the landfill. And your children will learn a more thoughtful way to be a consumer.
