Which would you teach a child and why: sewing, quilting, or crocheting?

I’d like to expose my child to one but not sure which.

I’ve been embroidering and hand sewing since I was 4, machine sewing since 5, quilting since I was 6, and never did get the hang of crocheting — though I can make really nice lumpy worms.

I think kids should be introduced to any of the fiber arts at as early an age as possible, even if it’s just fabric fondling and button sorting. Any of these are intellectually and developmentally valid activities for children — they learn hand-eye coordination, sequence of operations, following instructions, patience, delayed gratification, problem solving, and a host of other skills that are directly transferable to other activities later. And these are non-gender-specific skills. (True story: my MIG welding instructor won’t teach you unless you can sew at least a little on a sewing machine. Develops hand-eye-foot coordination.)

Which one(s) does your child seem most interested in? Which one is s/he most likely to succeed in just a little at this age? Are you willing to stand back and accept some less than perfect offerings? (My grandmother nearly killed my sewing career when I couldn’t do a flat felled seam well enough to suit her– I was 7, and pronounced too ham-handed to ever learn to sew. So I learned on my own.)

Or consider learning a new skill together… weaving, sprang, needle tatting, knitting, embroidery, needlepoint…
