Am I better off buying a spray gun or renting a spray gun for staining?

-Its for an average sized backyard wooden fence.
-If buying is better… what are some good ones… thanks!

I would rent one, unless you have many paint projects you would use it on. After you finish your fence, it will most likely be good for a couple of years. And most other household painting would require brush or roller application, and your sprayer will probably become a tool in your garage collecting dust.
Also if you do rent make sure all your prep work is complete, like sanding, drop cloths in place, primer applied where needed, and dry. So when you rent you come home, spray finish, and bring sprayer back right away, because most tool rental places will rent half or full day. Pay for the half day and then go golfing or fishing with the money and time you save.
