How to organize large cone thread in craft room?

I would like to hang 48 cones on my wall, but don’t want to build out of dowels and wood from scratch. Any ideas to re-purpose a different item? The “dowel” needs to be about 4″ high and the spacing needs to be about 2.5″ wide. Thread racks don’t work, I know cause I purchased one for my embroidery thread and the small cones fall off all the time – EEK – thanks so much for the ideas.

You could always install shelving on your wall to place them upright – it won’t solve the problem of keeping them perminantly in place, but they would be neatly organized and give the room a colorful display. I found a helpful source, below that has some other ideas…
