how much yarn would i need to create a 5 by 5 ft blanket?
I want to create a granny square blanket (black and white). What kind of yarn should i use and how much do you think i would need? because i dont want to go back out again to buy more yarn.
There are a few variables when calculating yarn amounts. Yarns come in different weights (thickness), and skeins come in different lengths. For example, Lion Brand Babysoft (weight category 3, sport) is 5 oz and 459 yards per skein. LB Vanna’s Choice (weight 4, worsted) is 3.5 oz and 170 yards per skein. LB Homespun (weight 5, bulky) is 5 oz and 154 yds per skein. And LB Hometown (weight 6, super bulky) is 5 oz, 81 yds per skein. All these yarns are great for a granny square blanket (see link below for free granny square blanket patterns).
The larger the yarn, the faster the blanket can be made. Another variable is the size stitch you crochet. The smaller/tighter your stitches, the more yarn you will need.
You can buy one skein of the yarn you think you want to use, and make a single square to determine how much yarn is used, then calculate out how much you will need for the entire blanket. Or, you can look at the patterns in the link below, estimate high, and return any unused skeins when you are finished making the blanket.
